The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. -Eleanor Roosevelt

Learning to fly is such an exciting, exhilarating and quite frankly, amazing experience that it is difficult to describe. But people, including some of the world’s greatest philosophers, have tried. Some of the most famous quotes that have stood the test of time are centuries old, and since they were written way before we were able to fly- the feelings were pure imagination. In other words, people were dreaming of flying way before it was even a possibility. Lucky for you, it is now not only possible, but accessible. What about you? Are you ready to fly?

“When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.”
– Leonardo DaVinci

“Man must rise above the Earth—to the top of the atmosphere and beyond—for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives.”
– Socrates

“The desire to fly is an idea handed down to us by our ancestors who, in their grueling travels across trackless lands in prehistoric times, looked enviously on the birds soaring freely through space, at full speed, above all obstacles, on the infinite highway of the air.”
– Wilbur Wright

“Sometimes, flying feels too God-like to be attained by man. Sometimes, the world from above seems too beautiful, too wonderful, too distant for human eyes to see.”
– Charles A. Lindbergh

You can find list lots of places, and you can certainly put one together much longer than this, but here are the TOP 8 incredible things about learning to fly.

The Pandemic Effect

The impact of the pandemic in the workplace will continue to be felt for years to come, but we already know some of the consequences to the workforce. The pandemic, workplace repercussions and the decisions that many companies face today to deal with them will directly impact their recovery, the workforce, and the economy at large.

Here are the realities that are already well established and now widely documented… most recently in a large study from LeanIn.Org.

Employees are struggling to do their jobs. Remote working has blurred the lines between home and work. There is real stress in worrying about job security that came with the uncertainty that the pandemic brought. There is also stress over finances. Burnout rates are higher than ever before.

The Compounded Effects on Women
The study also shows in particular women have been adversely impacted. Women who are mothers have always had a much heavier load to carry, but the pandemic brought the additional roles of “teacher” and “educator” onto their already full plates. Women- particularly women of color were more likely to have been laid off as companies made budgetary cuts.

The workplace situation has more than one in four women considering “downshifting their careers or leaving the workforce all together. The situation is considered a workforce emergency that could significantly impact the country.

Smart companies are addressing the potential crisis with flexible and empathetic thinking meant to retain great women and other minority employees.

The BIG Picture
rogress towards gender parity is slower that we thought it would be and slower than it should be. Pre-pandemic January 2020 showed slow but steady growth in the right direction. Senior Management positions held by women (between June 2015 and January 2020) grew from 23 to 28 percent and the C-Suite Tier grew from 17-21 percent. However, these numbers still indicate a massive underrepresentation of women.

Anna Poole, co-author of the book, Creating Futures that Matter Today and an expert in facilitating individual leadership development and top team development says, “As an executive coach for the past 20 years, across many industries and well-known brands, I can unequivocally say that when women are not supported in growing professionally, due to a lack of inclusive leadership, everyone loses.  I see this every day—a profound indifference and lack of concern about the welfare and experiences of women at work.

It’s tragic, because female leadership is linked to the creation of more psychologically safe teams and work cultures—which automatically supports higher engagement and performance.  Women tend to bring a stronger empathy and focus on customers, leading to stronger bottom lines.  And they tend to be curious about more diverse points of view, supporting innovations and break through thinking.

Regardless of how many women companies hire, if the leadership is indifferent or downright hostile towards them, women will not thrive, they will not be able to bring all of what they are capable of contributing to work, and everyone will lose out.”

This is precisely why companies must act decisively and creatively to retain women on their payrolls. We urge all management to identify and work towards solutions to address the potential workplace crises.

Beverly’s Commitment to Gender Equality
We are proud of our commitment to gender equality and take our responsibility to our stakeholders, colleagues, and business partners seriously. Here are just a few facts that highlight our ongoing commitment to women and other minorities,

  • Gloria Bouillon (female) is the Airport Manager and Director (and a pilot)
  • Beverly Flight Center is owned and managed by 2 females
  • Baker Aviation is managed by a female
  • Avier Flight School is minority owned

More than one half of businesses operated by females and minority at our airport

Women in Aviation
Beverly is incredibly proud of this impressive list of woman and minority representation.

However, women and other minorities in aviation remain vastly underrepresented.  Gloria Bouillon, Beverly Airport Manager and Director works tirelessly to represent women in aviation locally, nationally, and internationally. Just days ago, she spoke virtually at an Aviation Conference that was held in Dubai.

“Working towards gender equality isn’t just a women’s issue or responsibility, it’s everybody’s responsibility. The reality is that everyone should be fully engaged and part of the solution as everyone benefits.”  – Gloria Bouillon, Beverly Regional Airport

We would love to answer any questions or help you with all your aviation needs. Please contact us today.

General Aviation has weathered the pandemic, and gratefully in our case, we’ve continued to grow in spite of it. With determination, thoughtful planning and strong leadership, we’re emerging with new plans and prospects on the horizon.

We will be releasing the date soon for the Request for Proposals (RFP) to develop 12 acres of highly desirable property that is strategically located with access to air, rail, and highway… offering companies the ultimate in logistics with zero transportation hurdles to overcome.

The parcel offers tons of curbside frontage with utilities that are already in place and built-in safety and security as there is an established police and FEMA presence.

Finally, the proximity to Boston, healthcare industries, biotech, life sciences, and more make this project a tremendously exciting prospect for potential developers.

Who Will Benefit?

This new 12 acre development will not only benefit the businesses but the community as well generating economic growth by creating both direct and indirect jobs.

We really see ourselves than so much more than an airport. We are an economic hub that values aviation and non-aviation businesses and our community at large. We want individuals to prosper, and are invested in doing our part to facilitate growth of the local economy. We believe we have a perfect location, infrastructure, space and mentality to usher in this next phase of economic growth and prosperity for the people of Beverly, says Gloria Bouillon, Airport Manager.

Exceptional Neighbors

If there is any doubt that an additional business park is not a great idea, look no further than Beverly’s own, Cummings Center and Cherry Hill Industrial Park in Danvers.

Here’s just a few of the companies that call these two parks home.

These amazing companies and organizations all have highly successful operations that are thriving- making Beverly a proven locale and a sure thing for prospective companies.

Contact Airport Manager, Gloria Bouillon for more information to request an RFP and make a great decision to develop 12 Acres of Opportunity that will be virtually guaranteed to succeed.

Meet Emma Anderson, Desk Dispatcher/Receptionist

Beverly Flight Center
Emma not your typical 20 year old. She has a full time job at Beverly Flight Center while continuing her aviation education and is a pilot!

Q & A

How long have you worked at the airport?
Two and a half years.

What’s great about your job?
I love the environment and the people I work with. Beverly Flight Center is located next door to DFBO the FBO, North Atlantic Air, and the maintenance hangar, Air Bear Aviation, which makes work even more fun because I’m surrounded by people who also have a passion for aviation.

Also, I love seeing students and instructors progress. There’s nothing like watching students come in for their introductory flight, and watching them eventually earn their pilot’s license. Or seeing a former employee fly at an airline knowing how hard they worked to get there. It’s one of the best parts of my job!

How does the airport support you and the community?
I started working as a senior in HS. I remember my co-workers were like – why don’t you do the North Shore Community College and take your classes at the Beverly Flight Center? I’m glad they encouraged me to stay
at the airport and get my private pilot license that way, instead of going to a different college. Now, I am working on getting my instrument rating.

I also bought a share of a plane with my mom, Tina, which is leased back to Beverly Flight Center. This move has allowed me to have more opportunities and grow as a pilot.

What are you most proud of?
Earning my pilot’s license! Flying has helped me come out of my shell and become more confident.

What’s your favorite thing to do when not working?
Fly to new airports and meet people who share a passion for aviation.

We are thrilled that Beverly Flight Center is a part of our amazing businesses in residence. They offer multiple flight training opportunities on a wide variety of aircraft. Additionally they offer introductory flights, and lots of gorgeous scenic flights including coastal, foliage, city, and lighthouse and neighborhood tours.

With 38 countries represented, this was an excellent conference put together by Andrew Hazell and the Chair Chris LeTourneur President & Chief Executive Officer, MDX Development Strategies.

Conference overview
Most airports face serious disruption to their finances and operations, with traffic and revenue forecasts in tatters and millions of aviation jobs threatened worldwide.

The longer-term implications are exacerbated by a perfect storm of collapsed traffic, growing pressures on traditional retail and concession models and, most critically, a rapid and radical shift in customer needs, mindsets and behaviour in response to the pandemic crisis.

Leading experts and industry stalwarts helped guide us through the current challenges and the future outlook.

Said Airport Manager, Gloria Bouillon, “I was honored to speak on the CEO Panel with Chair Chris LeTourneur with Chief Executive Officer Mark A. Thorpe, Ontario International Authority and Executive Director Bill Wyatt, Salt Lake City Department of Airports. We discussed what we’re doing at our airports to build non-aeronautical revenues, and reviving consumer and business confidence.”

Other topics covered included:

  • Stakeholder cooperation and partnerships
  • Recent trends in airport revenues as a direct result of the pandemic
  • Impact of lessons and restrictions caused by Covid-19 on passenger behavior and psychology

In 1928 Amelia Earhart became the first female to cross the Atlantic by airplane. In that same year, the City of Beverly built the Beverly Regional Airport.

Built through the efforts of the Beverly Aero Club and the Beverly Chamber of Commerce, the airport was commissioned and operated by the US Navy during World War II. In August of 1941, a rededication of the Beverly airport was held to officially open and celebrate New England’s longest paved runway.   The airfield was upgraded and a new asphalt runway was added in 1943. Decommissioned in 1945 as a military facility, the airport was transferred back to the city in 1950.

Beverly Airport is well known in the aviation industry. According to the city’s Master Plan, the airport’s control tower won the Facility of the Year award from the 2018 Midwest Air Traffic Control (ATC) Service, and has experienced 50% growth over the last five years. Hollywood has visited the airport, filming scenes there for the 1990s films The Perfect Storm and The Proposal.  Recent books such as Fly Girls have reinvigorated interest in the many woman pioneers in aviation.

Did you know that Beverly has had its own woman in aviation? Airport Manager since 2018, Gloria Bouillon, is a commercial, instrument rated pilot with a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management from Dowling College, School of Aviation and Associates Degree in Aviation Science, Professional Pilot.  She serves on the Board of Directors for the North Shore Chamber of Commerce and Massachusetts Airport Managers Association, the Community Advisory Committee for MassPort and on its Environmental and Health subcommittee, and participates in various economic development committees.

Gloria has accomplished much at the airport in a short time due to her varied background. Previously #8 in the state in their category for airport operations, it’s now #2, and her diligent work on the Master Plan will help to set, and measure, airport goals for the next 20 years.  With its positive reputation and an annual economic impact of over $34 million, Beverly Regional Airport is poised for growth and success.

Additionally, Gloria enjoys mentoring other woman and loves to fly people in her personal aircraft and show them the wonders of aviation. Beverly’s first female airport manager truly has her eyes on the sky but her feet on the ground!

“When once you have tasted flight, you will forever walk the earth with your eyes turned skyward, for there you have been, and there you will always long to return.” ~  Leonardo DaVinci

Ask any pilot and they will tell you unequivocally, that nothing (or almost nothing) can compare with taking that very first flight.

Fortunately, we have two amazing flight schools on site offering perspective pilots a multitude of opportunities to learn to fly. They are Beverly Flight Center and Avier Air.

For this month’s Business in Residence, we are featuring Avier Air in our Spotlight Blog Post and we’ve combined it with our new series, Spotlight: In Their Words… The People Behind The Numbers, and we will feature one Avier’s employees.

About Avier
Avier offers a unique approach to instructional flying that many perspective students find exciting.

Mission Based Training
Avier calls their training “mission based” where each lesson incorporates all aspects of learning to fly. Mission based differs from conventional flight training that is taught with sequential and repetitive lesson plans.  This approach offers a much more dynamic and often pleasurable experience for flight students, as the lessons unfold as the flight unfolds.

Avier offers a variety of flight training packages for both aspiring private and corporate pilots. Programs include Instrument Rating, Commercial Pilot, and Professional Pilot. Finally, a Discovery Flight Program is available for purchase for yourself or a gift that offers 15 minute to 60 minute experiences.

In addition, Avier also offers a wide variety of Aircraft Rentals that include trainers, VFR, IFR, high performance and complex aircraft.

Spotlight: In Their Words… The People Behind The Numbers

Meet Esteban Monterroso Partner, Avier
Esteban’s story of emigrating from Columbia to live the American Dream is incredibly inspiring. Today he is a pilot, and successful business owner and partner in Avier Air.

Q & A

How long have you worked at the airport?
12 years. I came from Columbia while I was still in high school and while in high school I met Paul Beaulieu who was one of my teachers and also a flight instructor. Paul became somewhat of a father figure and mentor. Ultimately, Paul opened a flight school and hired me where I first worked as a lineman. Paul’s vision was to open a flight school with exceptional customer service. He started small with just one plane and one flight instructor. Today Avier has 13 planes and 8 instructors.

What’s great about your job?
Helping make people’s dreams of becoming pilots come true.

How does the airport support you and the community?

“Gloria (Gloria Bouillon, Airport Manager) supports our ideas; she wants to make the airport friendlier. The airport wasn’t as friendly as it is now. She has helped us expand our community.”

What Are You Most Proud of?
The community we have built with people from all over the world representing about 35 countries. It’s truly a gift and pleasure to share our passion for aviation.

Kim Crofts retires after 24 years

In this series, we will look behind the numbers detailed in the recently published  Massachusetts Economic Impact Study and get to know some of the people that make Beverly Regional Airport such a valuable asset to the community, area and state of Massachusetts.

But first, a little about the groundbreaking study.

About The Economic Impact Study
The Economic Study provides us with all sorts of significant and insightful information to inform us on all the ways that Beverly Regional Airport economically impacts the area.

Performed over a 3-4 year period, the study evaluated the current funding for airport safety and preservation projects, and measured the employment, payroll and economic output that aviation brings to the Commonwealth and the host communities.

In short, the economic impact that is created directly and indirectly via Beverly Regional Airport is varied and massive. The study breaks it down in great detail by local, regional and state economies with economic impact analysis considering the annual impacts associated with on-airport, aviation-related businesses and government organizations, capital improvement projects, military aviation, the spending of visitors who arrive via scheduled commercial service airlines, and the spending of visitors who arrive on privately-owned general aviation aircraft.

Please refer to the recently published Massachusetts Economic Impact Study for the full report.
